The process of Developing a Resume

Sometimes the hardest part of developing a resume is starting the process. Here is a simple “checklist” outlining the process of creating an effective and professional resume:

  • Gather Information—names, places, dates of employment, and education
  • Assess your skills and experiences related to the type of positions you are seeking
  • Outline your resume and organize effectively
  • Review and edit, ask for feedback and revise accordingly
  • Continue to revise your resume and revise throughout your academic and professional career

Common elements:

  • Heading: Your name and contact information
  • Objective: Brings focus to the resume and indicates the type of person you are
  • Education: List your educational background, names of colleges and degrees or date you anticipate graduating
  • Related Course Work: List courses related to the job you’re applying to
  • Experience: Llist other jobs you’ve had in the past
  • Other: These are common elements but they are not limited to only these. Add other categories as you see fit
